A nice argumentative post! I have read a long discussion and hot argument regarding backlink. Really it should be clear. I think, the best example of backlinking is submitting articles or blogs into various article directories and blog sites with a inbound to to the website that I am willing to promote. There are a number of ways of backlinking such as blog commenting, forum posting and so on but all must be with a link in them.

Yes mariesheila, but only from direct users browsing the website, where the no-follow link is shared. The user can simply copy the no-follow link and paste it in his web-browser url window. For better results with no-follow links, you must include a good and entertaining description along with your no-follow link. However this no-follow link is not going to improve the SERP of your website, because the search engine bot will not follow that link to your website. If the website (where your no-follow link is placed) is a high traffic public board, then it is possible for your website to gain some extra traffic from that no-follow link.

Dofollow or Nofollow link regardless of that, if your link was included in a popular forum it will gain extra traffic because people will intend to check that website out, so it will be beneficial if the user can join popular forums and spread PR there
