Backlinks or also known as inbound links are key factor in your website SEO . The process of building backlinks to your site is really slow and time consuming . The whole idea of backlinks creation is based on the architecture of the search engines and the way search engine ``bots`` are finding and indexing your website content . When a search engine ``bot`` finds the website ``x`` , it starts checking the available content on the website . If there is inbound do-follow link of your website in the content of website``x`` , the search engine ``bot`` will follow that link . The ``bot`` will end on your website and it will start checking and indexing your content . The importance of a certain backlink is defined by the content type of the referring website and how similar it is to your website content . What I mean is , that a backlink is considered relevant , if for example your website is about car reviews and the ``x`` website content is related to car reviews . If the above backlink is on a website with absolutely no relation to your website content , then it is most likely that backlink to be considered irrelevant by the search engine ``bot`` . You have to be extra careful with the backlinks (outbound) on your website and the backlinks to your website (inbound links) . If your backlink is found for example on a website, which is already penalized by the search engine for being a ``link farm``, then the chance for penalty to your website increases . It is dangerous to have links pointing to websites with malware or any type of blackhat content too . Another way to get your website penalized by the search engines is the website interlinking . If you have multiple websites on a single IP , do not make inbound links between them , because if you interlink those websites ,your website is going to be penalized . It is important , when you are building backlinks to your website to add an anchor text with the created links . Backlinks with appropriate anchor text and on a relevant website are more important for your website indexing . The backlinking building activity is one of the most important parts of your websites SEO and you must perform it often , but always carefully .

RE: Off-site SEO - Backlinks
Does this mean that if in cases like there are backlinks in your website from another website, there is a probability that my your website will be penalized by the SEOs even if the two websites are totality unrelated? How could that be possible?

RE: Off-site SEO - Backlinks
As I understand Max's posts, if the website that have your backlinks is penalized by the SEO's, your website will also have the chance to suffer the penalty. That's why it is important to have a credible and established website to have your backlinks posted in their content, not just any website.

RE: Off-site SEO - Backlinks
Hey mariesheila . About your concern - no , your website will not be penalized . The only effect will be , that the backlink will be most likely ``ignored`` and defined as irrelevant from the search engine crawler/bot . There will be no negative result from such backlink , but there will be nothing gained from that backlink too .

RE: Off-site SEO - Backlinks
But Max when the bot considered your link as irrelevant, it will also be declared as trash? it will be counted against your percentage of good backlinks right? Or am I just saying trash here?
Atleast that what I understood by your post above.

RE: Off-site SEO - Backlinks
I think , that if your websites backlinks are mostly of the example type , then even a search engine penalty could be possible . But in the current example with only one backlink (or even 100 - it depends) of this type , there is nothing to worry about, at least I think so . If a search engines were penalizing every website with irrelevant backlinks , then every competitor could try to spam other websites with irrelevant backlinks to your website , so he can take you out .

RE: Off-site SEO - Backlinks
I guess you are right Max, but some make profits by making useless backlinks with no content, as long as their link was clicked, they made a buck

RE: Off-site SEO - Backlinks
You can not make direct profit from a backlink , Marie .However, you can use the traffic generated from those backlinks by converting it . Once again , if there is traffic , then there is numerous ways to profit from your website . I can`t give a general answer about monetizing of your website in one post . This is one of the complex subjects , that we could discuss in separate thread . I will soon make a thread on this subject or if anyone feels like starting one - please do .

RE: Off-site SEO - Backlinks
Yes they use the traffic in their useless link to make a buck..where there is traffic there is profit...some even use porn just to generate traffic like 'Apaullo nude here' and then those people who wanna see Apaullo nude will click it then they will be redirected to a Christian website lols! I was once a victim to it
I clicked a very enticing link name then I was redirected to a church's site haha!
