VPS Selection – HDD and Bandwidth
Usually, even the VPSs from the lower budget class are featuring more than enough HDD space. However, I must suggest you to choose VPS with at least 10GB storage space, and maybe even more if your website`s database size is big. If you are planning to host your medium sized wordpress (e.g.) site, then you really should avoid any excessive expenses on extra HDD storage space. Do not forget to include in your calculation about the required HDD space, storage demanding website components, such as all uploaded backups, swap files, ``big`` software add-ons etc... Now, the most popular and hard question – How much bandwidth is enough? Well, there is no universal answer to this question, and the only way is to try and calculate the approximate needed bandwidth by yourself. For example, if your website has 10 webpages x 100Kb each and approx. 1000 users per day (visiting each page once), then you going to need approx. 1000MB, which means that you should select a VPS with more than 30GB monthly bandwidth. The optimal selection includes a VPS with 50-60% bigger monthly bandwidth, than the expected maximal bandwidth ``consumption``. Another important technical aspect of your future VPS is the port speed, that you will be provided with. You should check, if the advertised port speed is shared or dedicated to your VPS, and if it is shared ask the provider what is the guaranteed minimal port speed. The previous clarification is very important, because if your port speed is too low, then you should experience numerous webmaster ``discomforts`` , such as decreased website overall performance (loading, downloading/uploading files, etc..), impossibility to use the entire bandwidth quota, and unfortunately much more Herein, check the exact type and speed of your VPS` port. I can recommend a purchase of a VPS with at least 100Mb/s dedicated port speed. The last (not by importance ) piece of information that should be checked, is about the Guaranteed Uptime, Customer Support and of course the service history (user reviews, complains, etc...) of your potential future VPS provider. You should also try to find in which data center are hosted the servers of your provider; is your provider a reseller or a direct vendor; and you must also read in full the hosting company TOS/SLA. That is the seventh``chapter`` of our new VPS selection series. You can check all other threads on this subject from the below links: VPS Selection – RAM VPS Selection – CPU VPS Selection – Managed or Unmanaged VPS Selection – Windows or Linux VPS Selection – IP Adresses VPS Selection – Control Panel Stay tuned for the next discussion on another key VPS resource and its importance for your website`s performance. Do not hesitate to ask, if you have any related questions. |
