The unique IP address is a big advantage for your website. However, we have discussed the importance of the unique IP address, so I will continue with discussion about the IP addresses and their correlation with your new VPS purchase.

Usually, the budget VPS comes with 1 or 2 IP Addresses, which are assigned to your chosen VPS` DNServers. The websites hosted on that VPS could also use the same two IP Addresses, so if you are going to host 1-2 websites on your VPS, then 2 IP`s will be enough. In case, that you are planning to host more than 2 websites, then you should order an appropriate number of extra dedicated IP Addresses. The price of 1 extra dedicated IP varies with the different VPS providers, however, it is usually in the 0,5$-2$ price range.

Many providers of Virtual servers will be hesitant to provide additional IP addresses-- even at a cost-- without sufficient need. The current standard for IP addressing is known as IPv4 (version 4) and the pool of available IPv4 addresses is steadily decreasing. ARIN (American Registry for Internet Numbers) has placed limitations on the number of IP addresses that a single entity can possess. The most common need for additional IP addresses will be for SSL Certificates. Each domain protected by an SSL will need its own dedicated IP address.

If you foresee your server needing multiple IP addresses you will want to check with the provider for both cost and the process to get additional IP addresses.

Yes, that`s true, Mike. IPv4 provides too little addresses ( 32bit - less than 4,5 billions), and even the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) announced a year ago, that

This is the future but until the most of the internet as a whole supports this we have to live with the restrictions of a dwindling pool of IPv4 addresses.

Ah, so up until now we are still using the version 4 and are not fully implementing the version 6?

So with the ever increasing numbers of NEW servers and websites launched, is there a possibility that eventually there will be no more new websites that can be served since I think the version 4 will be truly exhausted.

And may I ask how many IP's can a Provider be allowed to use and distribute to its clients?

I believe the number of IP addresses that can be distributed is dependent on how many servers and stations the provider has. Larger hosts tend to have the ability and resources to distribute more.
