VPS Selection – Managed or Unmanaged
This will be one of the shortest threads of the `` VPS Selection`` series, because the selection between Managed and Unmanaged VPS is entirely depending on your technical knowledge and available time for managing. Anyway, if you are confident in your technical abilities and you have enough time for VPS management activities, then you should definitely choose the unmanaged VPS, because the monthly rental costs will be 20-30% lower. Managed VPS is the best choice for all new to the VPS hosting or webmasters with not enough time for VPS maintenance, hosting software platforms installations, adequate security provision, etc… Regardless of the chosen VPS management type, you should always read in full the TOS/SLA of your provider, before any VPS purchasing, because you must be aware of exactly what you can expect from your provider (regardless support, VPS maintenance, etc…). This is the third ``chapter`` of our new VPS selection series. You can check all other threads on this subject from the below links: VPS Selection – RAM VPS Selection – CPU VPS Selection – Windows or Linux VPS Selection – IP Adresses VPS Selection – Control Panel VPS Selection – HDD and Bandwidth Stay tuned for the next discussion on another key VPS resource/feature and its importance for your website`s performance. Do not hesitate to ask, if you have any related questions. |

RE: VPS Selection – Managed or Unmanaged
I haven't had the time to fully optimize my VPS servers so I always opt for the managed option. I respect the brave souls who have the time and effort to go with an unmanaged server.

RE: VPS Selection – Managed or Unmanaged
Most medium sized businesses can save money on an unmanaged VPS host if they have the technical knowledge and resources to sustain the operation. Large businesses seem to be more suited for managed VPS hosting because it saves time which is required to maintain the server. If your business involves demanding applications and real time systems, either service can serve your needs.

RE: VPS Selection – Managed or Unmanaged
I have seen many people come and go after choosing unmanaged hosting - but as Mamatha said it really depends on the situation of the client. If he's working for a larger business then he should go for managed hosting (in general), and vice-versa for smaller businesses with more technical know-how and a tighter budget. Some hosts do provide managed servers for just as cheap as unmanaged servers at other places, so a good "shop-around" is definitely necessary.

The cost benefit isn't a big factor anymore from what I can see. A lot of hosts much prefer you to go the managed route because they know unmanaged servers can be tweaked to use a lot more resource than they really want you to have. Unmanaged hosting that gives full command to the website owner over the server.Major benefit of managed hosting is that managed virtual servers have over the unmanaged one is that it is more flexible and convenient.

Exactly. Do you think the premium you pay for managed servers is worth it over the unmanaged ones? ChiChi's Floral - Hosted by Myhosting COMING BACK SOON! (Fall 2012) |

RE: VPS Selection – Managed or Unmanaged
According to me, If you don't have any experience related to Hosting in VPS or work with control panel then you can select Managed VPS Hosting.
Generally Managed Hosting is very costly but we can get any small support on managed Hosting. Where in unmanaged Hosting you just get basic support & it costs you cheaper then Managed Hosting.
