VPS Selection – CPU

One of the most important components of your future VPS is its CPU resource quota. The available dedicated CPU quotas are directly defined by the Server`s CPU and respectively the total server`s CPU power. The type of the server`s CPU is very important, because when you are purchasing your VPS, you can choose between different dedicated processing power quotas, but 1GHz from an Intel Celeron/Atom is not the same as 1GHz from Intel Xeon (e.g.). That is in result of a different CPU architecture, and more specifically differences in the CPU components, such as on-chip cache, 32-bit or 64-bit. You should also select the number of dedicated processor cores at the chosen dedicated frequency (e.g. 1 core, 2 cores, etc...). Multiple core VPSs are capable of producing higher multitasking performance, so it is always better to purchase multiple cores, if you can afford such investment.

You should choose your CPU quota in accordance with all other VPS resources. For example, a dedicated 6GHz dual-core CPU won`t be used to its full potential, if your VPS has 256MB guaranteed RAM.

The most popular budget VPSs are including 1-2GHz of dedicated single core CPU, which with the appropriate balance with all other resources will be enough for a low to medium traffic website.
