If you want to start your first website and you already have the ideas , but you don`t know what type of web-hosting you should choose - this is the right thread for you .
There is different types of web-hosting and most of them are determined by the usage of the server resources . The first and the most suitable hosting type for new websites is the Shared Hosting. If you choose a shared web-hosting , you will be on the same Server/VPS with other clients websites , but your monthly costs will be small . You are going to share the same IP with all the other clients and you will be able to use limited resources depending on your web-hosting plan . Shared hosting is really the best choice for your new website , but only in the beginning, when your website is still ``small``. By ``small`` I mean - under 1000views/day , 1-10Gb database and so on . VPS Hosting - This the best choice , regarding price/resources/security . VPS (Virtual Private Server) is giving you a lot of advantages compared to Shared hosting . The main advantages are unique IP/IPs , more Bandwidth, more HDD space and the most important of all - bigger CPU usage quota . VPS is the place to be for your website , when its clear that your website is demanding more resources , than you can get in shared hosting environment . Note , that VPS hosting will require additional management , regarding installations of software, security etc. . Dedicated Hosting - With this type of hosting your website is the only one on the server , capable of using all server resources . Everything is better , than all other types of hosting , except of the price which is significantly bigger . All of the described hosting types can be purchased managed or unmanaged . Co-Located Hosting - This type of hosting is very similar to dedicated hosting . The only difference is that you are not renting a server , the server is yours and it is located for example in a data-center . You are paying certain fees to use the data-center infrastructure at predefined monthly quotas . It is usually very expensive to use your own servers with collocation . Cloud Hosting - When your website is cloud-hosted, it is using the resources of multiple servers and virtually the computing power is unlimited . Cloud hosting is really cost efficient and it is great choice if your website demands a lot of processing power . The main disadvantage in my opinion is that you are no longer controlling , where exactly your data is stored . |

RE: Web Hosting Types
If i were to put up a website I would prefer to to be cloud hosted, aside from it affordability the usage is unlimited. And since the data that I will be storing in my website won't be needing much security then I would go for cloud hosting. However, if I have an insurance company for example and I need to put up a website I would really go for Dedicated hosting. Aside from the protected information such as social security number and all other patient information details security is the topmost priority. Hence, some of the insurance companies here in the Philippines, I believe is using dedicated hosting servers.

RE: Web Hosting Types
I also agree with you Sheila, only the big guns can afford dedicated servers anyway, such as government agencies and insurance companies.

RE: Web Hosting Types
Yeah, only large scale businesses like big cooperatives, banks, and probably private security agencies will go for dedicated hosting.

RE: Web Hosting Types
E-commerce web-hosting? You know, that there is no such thing in the main web-hosting types, right? However, you can name a shared web-hosting, with specialized e-commerce features, a E-commerce web-hosting, but it will still be a shared web-hosting.

RE: Web Hosting Types
Shared hosting can oftentimes meet the needs of many sites. However, some shared hosting accounts will not meet certain requirements. For example, heightened security on a shared hosting account may prevent certain PHP functions from running or certain ports may be blocked that are needed for connecting to a payment processor. You will want to check your needed requirements with various hosts before you make your decision on which to use.
Some shared hosting accounts can have a dedicated IP as well. A common need for this is if your site is protected by an SSL. Both Virtual Dedicated and Dedicated servers are not always used for just one site. You can host multiple sites on either. They are great solutions for gaming servers, database management, and traffic-intensive websites. Virtual Dedicated and Dedicated servers will allow for greater control over the environment, including administrative or root access. With greater access and control comes greater responsibility. You will need to have a greater level of technical know-how to properly managed a Virtual Dedicated or Dedicated server. The security of the server will be managed by you(or your team) instead of the shared hosting provider. You many also need to install various items to render the system usable for your needs. Many servers will come with only a base installation and you will need to optimize the system for your particular needs; whereas a shared hosting account will be optimized, to a degree, for the most common needs seen with that provider. As there is a greater level of knowledge needed you many opt for a managed server where this is done for you and the fee for such is added to the monthly or yearly cost of the server.
