There are numerous ways of programming languages categorization. However, the most commonly used categorization is based on the programming characteristic and model. With this categorization, the programming languages are separated on three main groups. Please note that some languages cannot be limited to a single type of languages, because they are too complex, featuring elements from different programming groups.
Procedural Programming Languages – Unstructured Programming - FORTRAN; BASIC; - The programming method here is based on a specified list of operations. This operation list includes functions, methods, and/or subroutines. The programming matrix of these languages allows splitting of the bigger programming blocks to smaller programmatic tasks. Because of that, you can easily use part of the programming code again in another section of the current block, or even in completely new programming block. Structured Programming Languages – C; Pascal; - This type is also procedural based programming language. These languages are providing you with variety of tools, capable of handling ``larger`` programs. Object-Oriented Programming Languages – Java; Python; C#; C++; Visual Basic; - This is the newest type of programming languages. These languages are providing you with the ability to pair data with a certain operation, and that pairing is also known as an object operation. The above is only the general categorization, without the details for each type of programming languages. It will be great, if someone with programming experience helps with further info on this subject. |
