One of the most popular hosting platforms is Linux. The reason for that is the lower price and full compatibility with most of the modern applications, scripts, etc… The only disadvantage, which I can think of, is the initial user experience. Everyone remembers his first time with Linux
The switch from managed shared hosting environment to Linux VPS/Server is usually coming with numerous moments of confusion. That is why I`m starting the current thread. I will begin with all possible ways of accessing your Linux server files. There are 3 major methods for access: SSH, FTP (perfect with good FTP client), and Telnet sessions. The availability of file access methods depends entirely on your Linux hosting provider, and it may vary with the different providers. You can run and implement a variety of scripts/languages with Linux, such as PHP, CGI, ASP, and many more. Herein, Linux is fully competitive and compatible software platform, and it will provide you with almost unlimited modification and development options. Linux based VPS/Servers are also supporting the most popular relational database management system - ``MySQL``. I`m waiting for your feedback, ideas, and questions. |

RE: Linux Hosting - Quick Guide
I would add that Linux's simple coding structure is much more efficient than Windows. This allows you to require less processing resources and as a result have a lot more up time.

Quote:You can run and implement a variety of scripts/languages with Linux, such as PHP, CGI, ASP, and many more I am doubtful about ASP in Linux environment. According to my knowledge it is possible to run PHP and MySQL in Windows environment but it is difficult to run ASP in Linux environment. I know there are some packages available for it, but as per my experience they do not work properly. BODHost.com |

RE: Linux Hosting - Quick Guide
You can use packages like Mod mono for ASP .NET support and Apache::ASP is available for ASP support. I have not used myself but there are options available for running ASP and ASP .NET.

RE: Linux Hosting - Quick Guide
Linux is highly modular for it is very easy to be modified for customization. It can be configured and setup basically with almost everything. With Linux hosting, the users have great level of flexibility to change the source code of the Linux hosting to provide the best optimum solution and results.

RE: Linux Hosting - Quick Guide
The best thing about Linux for me is PHP. It is being used everywhere on the net including this very forum. The openness and rather manipulative nature of PHP makes it so easy to control and do whatever you want.

RE: Linux Hosting - Quick Guide
PHP is so important now a days which is why Linux is the most popular platform on the market. Even this forum is running PHP which speaks volumes about how relevant and prevalent it is in our daily web surfing. I just wish ASP was more stable on the Linux platform.
