svn subversion and ftp/wordpress updates
Hi
My hosting company has aubversion (svn) installed and i want to make changes to my WP site. Basically instal a new plug in which needs to be ftp’d as part of the WP installation process. The plug in creates a new folder I have ftp access The hosting company are saying that changes to files willaffect their SVN as the changes won’t be syncd!! Would adding a new folder be classed as a change? What efeect would there to my website? Or would it just affect their systems? Many thanks in advance for any help..bit of a newbie when it comes to servers[/align] |

RE: svn subversion and ftp/wordpress updates
Hello, wood1e. I can advice you, to simply contact the hosting company and ask them to upload the file and to sync all changes. Yes, there is a possibility for problems with their (Apache) subversion. However, I believe this problem is directly related to the provided web-hosting service, so they must assist you with this problem.

RE: svn subversion and ftp/wordpress updates
Hi,
Many thanks for the response. I understand that I can ask them, but I am not wanting to. Ideally I want to be able to update my website as and when I want. As I do with all my other websites. And as I will be doing with this website, making many staged amendments and layout adjustments, along with installing more WP plugins like a Back up facility. Now obviously moving host is a solution, but a little drastic!! What is it that SVN does? Is it a admin solution for hosting companies to keep track of updates and historical changes etc? I have never come across it before, and therefore can't see how it is fundamental to any web hosting? |

Yes, it is exactly what you have assumed in your post. Honestly, I would change my provider, if I were in your situation. You have one problem now, but how many you will have in future. It will consume less time to move your website, than non-stop troubleshooting hosting related issues.

So i either put up with them uploading site and page amendments..then wait for that to happen then test then get them to upload further amendments!! Or move hosts!! Would moving host inflict any downtime on the website? For dns propogation? Many thanks |

RE: svn subversion and ftp/wordpress updates
No, the DNS propagation is almost instant in most of the cases (according to my experience). However, some minor downtime is possible. Don`t change your DNServers, before the database movement. Move everything and then change the DNServers.

Many thanks for your help. It has been most enlightening!!
Seems a little strange that these guys would have such a system in place, or do they just want to charge for updates!!??!! |

You are Welcome, wood1e
I can`t give you an exact answer to your last question. Maybe it is on purpose, or maybe the usage of problematic subversions is just a bad software management decision.
