The metatags are in their nature,informational part of the HTML code on your website . Usually the Metatags are visible only to search engines bots/spiders . The whole concept of metatags is to define the key aspects on content of a certain web-page in ``concentrated`` form and in such way that the search engine ``bot`` could index the page correctly . There is a variety of metatags types , but the most important for your website SEO are the keyword metatags and description metatags . The description metatags are placed in the header of each web-page HTML and they provide the general information , about the content of that page . This type of metatags are usually 1-2 lines long and are related to the key content of the web-page . The other important type of metatags is keyword metatags . The keyword metatags are containing all relevant keywords on the specific web-page . Metatags are considered as key factor in your website on-site SEO and they are really important for the way , that your website content is going to be indexed by the search engines bots/spiders/Crawlers .
Below is an example of a metatag placement .
Code:
HTML Metatag Placement Example
<head>
<TITLE>This is the Web Page Title</TITLE>
<META name="description" content="Here you are defining the general keywords">
<META name="keywords" content="here is the place for the longer and more informational part of your keyword metatag . Remember to add a comma after each defined keyword ">
</head>
I was about to look up what metatags are and here I found a thread about metatags. It posts a question in my mind why there are websites that have metatags that are misleading to the content of their site. I guess they would like to be viewed more just to have their websites located when one is running a search. More often than not, there are also some websites that are harder to locate since their metatags are also either a little identical to some other sites or a possibility of complex metatags. Is there a thing like complex metatags?
I believe , that keyword metatags could be defined also as complex metatags . To your other concern , about the metatags duplicates - Yes , I agree with you . There is too much competitors in all niches and the duplicating of metatags is almost guaranteed at some point . When this happens , everything is up to the entire website SEO and on that base the website with better SEO will rank higher in search engines results in spite of the duplicate metatags . To avoid metatags duplicate , you must define the metatags as particularly as possible .
Does a website SEO have any given factors when they rank searches containing duplicate metatags?
I agree with Sheila about the duplicating of metatags, especially with porn, they almost have the same metatags all together. Also some are misleading as Sheila said and just wanted to have many visitors without any care about their content.
About SEO's factors on defining who will rank first on sites with the same metatags, I guess they rank on who has the most visits on their site and the content.
I also experienced that when I clicked on some related metatags from a specific website I immediately get spam emails. That's how fast they obtain information of my email address!
Yes Marie , a lot of webmasters are using blackhat methods to acquire the users information and to spam those users afterwards . However , I`m really against the use of such methods and because of that I`m going to stay away from further discussions on this subjects .
I am a member of a forum of Black Hats

but I am not practicing it mind you, I just want to learn everything that I can...Anyways Max I really think we should discuss this so that we will have knowledge on it and know what to do next time we encounter things like this. It does not mean we will discuss how to use black hats but instead we discuss here what can be considered as black hats..we never know, we might be doing black hat method without realizing what it is.
Meta tags are extremely important for indexing any website I have got to know from your discussion as well as from other sources. You also have shown clearly where and how to put Meta Tags in the web page. But I am confused about how long a Meta tag can be or about the appropriate length of Meta tag. What is the basic difference between Meta tag and Meta keywords. How many keywords can I put in a single website? I think for appropriate SEO these things might help the new website builders greatly.
I would be highly pleased if someone make the things clear. Thanks
The meta ``keywords`` are part of the meta tag. After every meta ``description``, you must enter all meta ``keywords`` as part of the meta tag. The length of your MetaTags , depends entirely of the certain web-page content and the density of the available keywords. You must try to use only those keywords, which are directly related to the content of the page. Irrelevant keywords in your metatag will have zero or even negative final result.
