Web hosting uses a lot of energy! Web servers that run 24/7 take a lot of power to operate. When you think about the vast number of websites in the world today, you realize that this is a major problem for the environment. Green hosting or eco-friendly hosting aims to address this concern. Some web hosting companies have changed their infrastructure to be “more green” by incorporating renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. This is something you may want to consider when choosing a web hosting company.

Anyone here on a Green Hosting service? Please feel free to share your experience.
I am! (one of my hosts). They get the job done, but I'm not sure quite how good they are for the environment
Is solar and wind energy enough to supply the world to totally eradicate the use of destructive energy? I too wanted to use solar energies but solar panels are expensive here in my country. You mentioned that some companies are now implementing "green" energy, I can just imagine how many solar panels they need to erect just to supply them 24/7. Incorporating renewable energy may be possible but to be totally dependent on them, I don't think so.

But I am glad that you informed me about this, we can do our share in any way we can to help the environment. I am imagining our world today just like in the MATRIX, the machine city where everything is run by electricity and it is destroying the world that we are living in. Tsk tsk..
I don`t think that solar and wind energy can be enough to supply the entire world , at least not with the current technologies . However I have an honest hope , that in near future a new more efficient energy catalyzing methods will be invented . At this point, even the energy saving methods implemented in some data-centers are good start . Sooner or later, there will be no other option , except new energy sources , because the present sources of energy will be used-up . It is always better to be prepared , rather than waiting for the last possible moment and herein I hope that more and more companies will move to the Green energy alternatives .
Geothermal energy is also a 'green' energy, it is currently one of the major supplier of energy in the Philippines, then some are pushing for nuclear energy which is obviously destructive to nature and are also being actively refused by the people. And yeah, we have to give credit to those companies that 'think' of the overall consequences of our technology to the environment by acting on 'green' measures.
Have you heard of any solar or hydro-thermal energy used by any web hosting companies? How could that be possible? I think with technology these days we can have endless possibilities when it comes to new inventions that are environment friendly and even cost-effective.
It is just an electricity, Marie. Once the solar or hydro-thermal energy is converted to electricity, it can be used to power the web-hosting servers and any other similar hardware/equipment.
I think today, as more and more green web hosting companies hit the scene, consumers must be aware of the fact that not all of them are as environmentally committed as they appear. In order to analyze and understand whether a web hosting provider is genuinely "green" or not, we must be able to understand the degrees of green web hosting.
I think that another important aspect of the ``eco-friendly`` transformation process is the type of used software. After all, it is the software that controls and through which the hardware is used. If the software is more efficiently using the available hardware, then the overall energy consumption will decrease. Unfortunately, the ``green`` aspect is still not very popular in the software development circles/communities. The result is an illogical paradox of ``greener and greener`` data-centers, but along with not completely optimized software, which is reducing the effect of the hardware optimization. This problem is induced by the constant demands of the software ``consumers``. The end-client is always wanting the specific software product as soon as possible, which usually results in neglecting of the ``green`` aspect. What do you think? Am I right?
I agree with the 'consumers' wanting the software ASAP, without realizing that with rushing the software, it greatly causes severe damage to the environment. Greener data centers are a new thing to consumers so they tend to shy away from it, they are contented with what they have now but it is causing damage to the environment.

The only way for people to accept Green Data Centers are through introduction and massive ads about it, we really have to step up and promote greener data centers, or the very technology we created will be the one that will destroy us all.
